Environmental baseline information on water, meteorological, soils, vegetation, cultural resources, fish and wildlife has been collected for the Project dating back to the mid 1980’s.
This data was reviewed and approved through the Alaska Surface Coal Mining Control and Reclamation Act (ASCMCRA) and various State permits were issued at that time. An Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was completed in the late 1980’s. Construction was not commenced under these original permits due to the worldwide economic downturn at that time.
In 2006, PacRim initiated a Supplemental EIS process and is preparing a revised set of ASCMCRA applications to move forward with the Chuitna mine development.
Significant additional baseline data continues to be collected to supplement the previous work.
